On Mothers' Day...

May 9, 2017

Considering the hard work involved with Motherhood, to be fair this event should last at least a week [LOL]. Always falling on the second Sunday of May, this special celebration goes back a long time. A powerfully symbolic image, the Mother figure finds a highly regarded place in most cultures and is represented with a child in her arms to distinguish this woman from other incarnations like Strength, Beauty or Fertility for example. The ancient Greeks and Romans were already celebrating some form of Mother's Day, but it's especially through the Christian traditions that the Mother figure, giving birth to the Son of God, becomes the supreme expression of unconditional Love.

Just like many of our favourite celebrations, Mother's Day too has been subjected to commercialisation. And when the ads put pressure on us to spend spend spend... what do we do? My advice to you is simple: buy less and buy better. Do not go spending hips of money trying to impress your mother, she is not easily fooled as you know very well; your smile and happiness are the gifts she prefers above all. Or choose something simple but useful, like a scented candle or a bar of handmade soap. You get the idea, more thought / less spend. Why not give her something you made yourself, instead, like a cake for example, some jam, a handmade card... can you knit something by Sunday?

For this Mother's Day celebrations I have started a competition that will see four randomly chosen winners, each take home one of these beautiful throws generously offered by United-Interiors.com. Entering this competition is easy: click on the image below and follow the quick instructions you find on my Facebook page. I will announce the four lucky winners this Sunday morning on my Facebook and Instagram pages.                             [ THIS PROMOTION HAS NOW EXPIRED ]

Ultimately, it's up to you how you choose to express your love for Mum; however make sure you, at least, get her flowers. Whether you buy them from a shop or you pick them from the front garden, flowers must be on the table this Sunday morning next to Mum's first cup of tea. She'll love that.
