To some, a home without Art is a home without soul.
Art in our homes can be the expression of one’s taste, a testimony of travel, a conveyor of mood, an expression of wealth… whatever the case, displaying Art into a living environment is making a statement.
Now, one important principle is to firstly draw a line between styling the property we live in and styling a property we are placing on the selling/renting market. In the first case we can dare showing strong artworks, as strong as our own taste allows. In the second case, Art must be used to convey a feeling of class and excite possible buyers, not scare them off.
In the Interior Design For Profit course we dedicate a chapter to why and how to target the widest market possible and increase our chances to profit. This reasoning also applies to the kind of artwork we choose as prominent features in our styling.
The subject of the images we introduce in our styling, its size, its strength of colours and contrast… many elements contribute to a more or less appealing room. Both pictures below are strong and exciting, but you surely agree with me that they both help achieve a very different mood in teh room.
Also the shape and size of our artworks has an important role towards a successful styling. In the images below the choice of a square or a round picture offers a different support to the other shapes present in the room, like the bed, the bedside table, the rug we use...
To conclude, choose wisely. Art can be a precious addition to our styling, but a delicate one that can seriously attract or distract the market from investing in our property.
A larger size artwork may offer a stronger impact but in a small room it could make the space seem smaller.
Landscape pictures offer ‘windows’ to look through, hence allowing the viewer to see beyond the wall and seemingly widen the space.
Framing will add value to almost any artwork.
Strong coloured or strong contrasting images may be used to lead attention to or away from certain areas.
Figurative art may be confronting to some and affect the response of our possible buyers.
