The Tidy Kitchen

August 30, 2017

The condition of the kitchen plays a vital role when selling your property. Even more important is the condition of the kitchen when renting it out. We all understand by now the importance of storage, bench-space, quality appliances, airflow… but after all that has been renovated without overcapitalising, let’s have another look at it. Let’s walk towards the kitchen and stop at the door. What do we see?

One of my Interior Design For Profit online course unbending rules is FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT. So, what is the first impression we get from our kitchen? Clean? Tidy? Welcoming? Spacious?

If we answered “no” or “maybe” at any of these questions… well, we have work to do. NOW!

The kitchen, to be a strong asset of our property, must be looked after in deeper detail than other rooms. In my IDFP course we give plenty of direction on how to make the most of this room: design, styling and decoration. These will add thousand of dollars to the value of your property. But one thing we can do immediately and at no cost at all will improve it in just a few hours.

Let’s start:

  1. Find a space for your mobile appliances into the cabinets and place them there as soon as you have finished using them.

  2. De-clutter all unnecessary gadgets from benches, walls and shelves. This will add to the feel of space and calm.

  3. Clean all surfaces and degrease well stove, sink, fridge and oven. Potential buyers do look there closely and will respond with a good or yucky impression.

  4. Wipe and shine the splashback and all cabinetry doors. Clean surfaces reflect light, which adds to the spacious feel of the room.

  5. And finally have fun with decorating: a group of 3 interesting objects, a plant, a nice wall clock…

Every detail of this particular room will affect the overall impression of your property, and ultimately its value. Its design and its clever-budgeted renovation are very important, but also important are tidiness and cleanness, which will add good vibes to the valuable first impression.  This means Profit.
