Not Only Up And Down

February 27, 2020

One of the most important features of any two-storey home is the staircase. Many people think of it as only having the basic function of allowing you between levels, up and down. But simplifying its purpose to this basic function means you miss out on all the benefits of these valuable feature of your home, and getting it right impacts not only the look and feel of your home but of course, also its value.

This striking design by Genneral Staircase is actually the first thing you see when you come through the front door, but unlike many home designs you’re not looking at the front of the stairs, you’re actually looking at the back, so it needed a design that suited this characteristic of the floorplan.

The main components of the staircase start with the tread, the part you walk on when you walk up and down, and the front of this is known as the raiser; it’s the part that you actually see when you look at the stairs from the front. On the side of the staircase are the balusters, and they hold the handrail, which you hold on to when you walk up and down the stairs.

In this particular home’s design, the staircase is located in the centre of the home. By opting for this staircase design with an open riser, the natural light is able to flood through, and most importantly, it looks good when you enter the home, as the front door is to the rear of the staircase.

The baluster here is a dwarf wall. This could have been thin bars or glass, but the Gyprock finish was a great choice as it repeats the crisp white walls of the home. It also results in the staircase being a sculptural element of the home, which is really important because it’s located right in the centre of it.

The handrail is attached to the baluster and its thin profile adds to the sculptural element and elegance of this design, whilst the Gyprock baluster continues upstairs, which also provides additional privacy to that area whilst adding continuity to the design.

Another important design element of this particular staircase is its striking decorative timber screen, which was created by Genneral Staircase in the same timber they used for the treads. It starts from the ground and runs vertically up through the angle of the staircase, catching your eye and drawing you up and into the space, making the ceiling feel so much taller than it already is.

NOTE: when selecting the finishes for your staircase, it's important to look to the rest of the home for inspiration. Repeating those finishes adds continuity to the interiors and makes your home flow beautifully from one space to the rest.

Every home is unique and deserves features that truly suit. Through a combination of great design, attention to detail and the right mix of finishes and materials, you can achieve the perfect staircase for your needs, and one which adds great value to your property.
