The main reason why I always suggest to buy the furniture in moderate colour choices is the opportunity this gives to refresh the room's feel often, without spending an arm and a leg. Refreshing a room is in fact easy, and it starts by choosing new affordable and smaller items like cushions, throws and ottomans. Choose what to add based on texture and colours and match or contrast these to the more expensive items you already have: the artwork, for example, or the sofa.
Floors and wall colours cannot be changed as easily as cushions and rugs... do that, instead. Invent a room's new personality by adding a rug with an interesting pattern or texture. Match it to the existing furniture and connect the lot with bold cushions and other interesting objects.
Reviving any room that's feeling tired is fun, and doesn't have to be expensive. If you are struggling for ideas, get inspired by visiting furniture stores or flick through design magazines. The new personality of your old room is just a cushion-throw away.
