Change of Mood?

As the seasons change, so too can the mood of our homes. It's the perfect time to refresh the spaces we live in and give them a new sense of character, but if simply changing your décor isn't enough, a fresh coat of paint could be exactly what your home needs. And you don't even have to repaint the entire home to refresh its style.

Differently from a tiled feature wall :) a painted feature wall is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to transform a room. Whether it's in a living room, bedroom or entry, a contrasting colour creates a focal point, adds visual interest and instantly brings personality to the space. When selecting a colour for a feature wall, I always consider the finishes that already exist throughout the home. Elements such as kitchen and bathroom splash-backs, bench-tops, flooring, joinery and of course the existing furnishing, all contribute to the overall palette, and a feature wall should complement these finishes rather than compete with them.

It's also a wonderful opportunity to introduce an accent colour that can then be echoed throughout the home in some new furnishing, artwork and accessories. Repeating that colour in small touches creates a cohesive look and helps tie the entire interior together.

If you're working to a budget, paint alone can make a remarkable difference. It's an affordable update that delivers plenty of impact without the need for major renovations. However, if you'd like to take your feature wall a step further, consider adding decorative wall cladding. Today's options extend far beyond simple vertical battens. You can choose from slim or wider profiles, grooved or concave designs, elegant French-style mouldings, framed wall panels, traditional wainscoting and many other decorative finishes. The possibilities are almost endless, allowing you to create anything from a contemporary statement to a timeless, classic interior.

Whether you choose paint, cladding or a combination of both, a thoughtfully designed feature wall is an easy way to breathe new life into a room and add fresh character to your home.

Three design tips to keep in mind:

  1. Character doesn't have to shout - A feature wall doesn't need to rely on a dramatic colour contrast. As shown in the images above, subtle shifts in tone can add warmth, depth and personality while maintaining a calm, sophisticated feel.

  2. Let texture do the work - If you're incorporating wall cladding, you may not need to introduce another colour at all. Painting the cladding the same colour as the surrounding walls allows the profile, texture and shadow lines to become the hero. Subtle and elegant.

  3. Work with what you already have - To achieve the best result without replacing your furniture and décor, choose a feature wall colour from a palette that complements your existing finishes, furnishings and styling. Your home will feel refreshed, cohesive and beautifully considered, while keeping the makeover budget firmly under control.
