Why Hybrid Flooring

Flooring is one of the most important visual and functional decisions in any renovation or new build. It’s also one of the most misunderstood. Many people get swept up in the look of a floor and forget to ask: Is this the right one for my project?

Before choosing your flooring, ask yourself:

  • What’s the function of the space? High-traffic areas need something robust and easy to clean. Think entryways, kitchens, and living zones.

  • What’s your climate like? Moisture and temperature fluctuations can affect natural timber or laminate. Hybrid flooring handles this beautifully.

  • What’s your aesthetic direction? Whether it's mid-century modern, coastal, or contemporary, your floor should harmonise with the overall palette.

  • What’s your installation method? Do you want something glued, nailed, or floating? Floating floors are often quicker and cleaner to install.

For our Guest House (the granny flat :) I selected FlooringXtra Hybrid flooring (Hybrid Reside Burra A8 'Creek') for many good reasons.

Hybrid flooring is essentially a printed timber-look surface fused to a rigid, waterproof core. It combines the best of laminate and vinyl, offering the look of real timber with the practicality of more robust materials. It's a great all-rounder that ticks the boxes for durability, comfort, and coastal-inspired good looks.

Also:

  • Quick Lay - It’s a floating floor, which means it clicks into place and ‘floats’ above the subfloor with a small expansion gap at the edges to allow for movement. No glue, no nails.

  • Where it meets tiles or door thresholds, a matching C-channel helps create a neat, refined edge without clunky joins.

  • Low maintenance – It’s super easy to keep clean, and being waterproof means it’s suitable for kitchen and laundry zones too.

  • Visually appealing – With its textured finish and natural light-catching surface, it adds depth and warmth without overwhelming the space.

Tips for a Seamless Look

  1. Lay flooring before the skirting goes on. This way, the skirting covers the expansion gap, giving a crisp finish – no need for scotia trims.

  2. Stick to one flooring type across small homes or flats to make the space feel larger and more cohesive.

  3. Choose a lighter tone to brighten smaller interiors and enhance a breezy, coastal vibe.

Yes, there are many choices available on the flooring market, and in the end the best flooring is the one that works for you – tough where it needs to be, soft where it counts, and beautiful wherever your eyes see. If still undecided I suggest you enter one of the many FlooringXtra stores and ask for advice. There are many great options out there but you only need to choose from the ones that suit your needs.
