Rugs For Summer?

Oh Yes!!

With winter now gone, turn that thick living room rug upside down and walk all over it, yes, just walk on it to let the grit fall out from deep down its thread. You'll be amazed to see how much dirt your vacuum cleaner leaves behind. Then take it out in the yard, give it a good old style beating and let it rest in the sun to kill any mites and bugs. Roll and store away!

Enters the Summer Rug. Striking or subtle? Coloured or muted? Patterned or plain? The choices are endless, but whether you already own one or you are going to buy one, you know that rugs are one of those styling touches that can provide a positive effect to any room.

Rugs are like artworks, in the way that they can attract or distract attention with their texture, colours and pattern. So, it’s important to select rugs that complement and enhance the rest of the room’s furniture style and colour scheme. And if styling to sell, my Interior Design For Profit online course always recommends any of your styling decisions to be driven by selections that will appeal to the largest audience possible.

Rugs can also be successfully used to define areas in large rooms, bringing back the intimacy some areas need, and allow you to create ‘zones’. In fact, rugs can help define the dining area from the lounge when these are in the same room. Rugs can also isolate one armchair and table creating the illusion of an intimate corner where to relax and read a book, allowing you to add personality and purpose to those difficult and unused spaces in the home.

Investing just a few hundred dollars in an appropriate rug may also be all that’s needed to improve the room allowing you to steer away from expensive flooring renovations. The right rug can in fact help cover, disguise or link seemingly ugly floors throughout a home, as well as providing your with a link to the rest of the styling through colour or pattern. A heavy patterned rug for example, could become a strong decorative element defining the character of a room the moment you walk in, whilst detracting the attention away from a floor we don’t like, but couldn’t afford to alter.

If styling to sell, the important consideration is to select rugs that will please most of our target market, looking to muted tones and interesting textures. The colours you decide to add to the space can then be repeated in the decor through smaller styling elements like cushions, plants and decorative objects.

You must remember that what seems beautiful and stylish to you may be bold and uncomfortable to others. Even though bold rug choices may be successful in your own living space, if it is an investment property you are sprucing up, it is essential you present it as appealing as possible to the widest possible audience.

Choose wisely.
