Hotel-inspired Ensuite

One of the most satisfying moments in any project is seeing how the small details come together when a project is complete. This ensuite is a great example. The space feels calm, elegant and slightly luxurious, yet it still fits perfectly with the overall character of the home.

The design started with the tile selection. The same tile has been used on two walls and the floor, largish size with a soft terrazzo pattern. It creates a strong sense of continuity whilst optically helping expand the narrow floor area. It carries a very gentle green undertone which gives the room a soft, welcoming feel. To complement it, a deeper green was introduced in the palette through the elongated subway tiles, adding contrast and personality without overpowering the space.
The long mirror placed above the ledge reflects the tiles from the opposite wall. This simple design move doubles the visual impact of the tile and helps make the room feel larger. I've used the 'feature' tile also into the shower where it wraps smoothly around the curved wall. Because the tile format is relatively small, the curve can be easily achieved while a larger time would have to be cut to follow the curve. This curved wall echoes beautifully the large ceiling shower rose above. On the straight section of the wall I've included a ledge for everyday items, keeping the shower functional without interrupting the design.
Brushed nickel tapware adds a contemporary feel and a refined touch, while the timber surface of the vanity introduces warmth and softness. Floating joinery also help increase the sense of space - more floor is visible, the larger the room seems. The overall result is a bathroom that feels a little like a high end hotel, but still comfortable and very much at home.
Design Tips to Achieve a Successful Room
1. Repeat materials for visual calm - Using the same tile on the floor and walls creates a seamless look that instantly feels more sophisticated and spacious.
2. Use mirrors to amplify good design - Position mirrors so they reflect your most beautiful finishes. Wall-to-wall mirrors literally double the apparent size of the room and helps bounce light around.
3. Add warmth with timber - Bathrooms can feel cold when everything is tile and stone. Plants and timber furnishing introduce natural warmth while keeping the space elegant.
A well designed bathroom does not need too many finishes. Often it is the thoughtful repetition of a few carefully chosen elements that creates the most striking result.
